Ruger22.com tips for fitting
an after market hammer

On occasion, you will find a problem with your safety after a "drop-in" hammer installation.
This can happen with any hammer be it a Volquartsen or a Power Custom.
The following demonstration will show you how to easily fix this problem in only a few minutes.

After you install your hammer and the other parts of the trigger assembly, and then cock it, you may find that the safety button sticks in the open (or ready to FIRE) position.

This is caused by the new geometries between the hammer/trigger/sear parts, combined with the sears position in relation to the slot in the center of the safety button.

In this illustration we see the complete sear/trigger assembly.....a safety button removed from the housing for demonstration purposes...and a sear all by itself.
Notice how the end of the sear fits in the slot in the safety button.
This is normal when the safety is set to FIRE.

Allowing the sear to drop into the slot in the safety button also allows the trigger to FIRE.

When the hammer is COCKED, and the safety button is PUSHED to the SAFE POSITION, the safety button should freely slide under the sear.

When this happens, THE SLOT IS NO LONGER UNDER THE SEAR, thus preventing down motion by the sear and thus preventing the unit from firing.

Here you see how the sear hits the side of the slot, preventing the safety button from sliding under the sear
(when the hammer is cocked and the button in this demonstration is pushed right to left).

The problem that needs to be fixed is a VERY TINY amount of material needs to be removed from the bottom of the sear, so it ALLOWS THE SAFETY BUTTON TO SLIDE UNDER IT.

To do this, you will remove A VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF MATERIAL from the bottom of the sear with either a stone or a very fine file as shown in this picture.

Remember to remove only a TINY amount of material, then reassemble your trigger unit, cock the hammer and see if the safety button slides easily UNDER the end of the sear you just filed/stoned.

If it still is blocked by the sear, remove it and file/stone away a tiny bit more material. Repeat this process removing only a tiny bit of material at a time, until the safety button smoothly slides under the sear (after the hammer has been cocked)

Eventually, you will get to the point where the safety button will smoothly slide under the sear (right to left in this picture), preventing the rifle from being fired as shown in this picture.

(PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS A HAND SHOT DEMONSTRATION PHOTO, AND THE GAP SHOWN HERE IS WAY TOO BIG...Only remove enough material to make the safety button just slide under the sear, while still making contact or less than a hairs thickness of gap. Never attempt to remove more material than is absolutely necessary or the sear may be damaged beyond repair).

If you feel you are not up to this task, contact a qualified local gunsmith.

You can also contact the hammer manufacturer.

Both of the two biggest companies in this field, Volquartsen and Power Custom will be happy to make arrangements to fit your sear for you (for an additional fee).
