.....and now a message from James Hines!

"Used to have a town, but the factory moved away Down to Mexico where they work for hardly any pay Used to have a country but they sold it down the river Like a repossessed farm auctioned off to the highest bidder. Mighty Trucks of Midnight moving on..."

(Bruce Cockburn, "Mighty Trucks of Midnight")

Dear Friend of Liberty,

The cost of Liberty is eternal vigilance ...and your congressman thinks you're asleep.

It is often said that the character of a man is determined by those things that he would or would not do when no one was watching.

Well, when it comes to our nation's sovereignty (and I'm assuming you DO care about that) - Congressman Bonner just demonstrated that he can't be trusted to protect that even when you can watch him voting on CSPAN. Today, Congressman Bonner (and a majority of his fellow congressmen - I'm sorry to say...) were more than happy to sell the management of our ports to the highest bidder: and the highest bidder (today) just happens to be OMAN.

I hope no one strikes a match - because there HAS to be a gas leak of unprecedented scope here: a gas leak that has produced a blanket of intoxicating (potentially explosive) vapors spreading from coast to coast.

Anticpating that many of you might misinterpret my protests as "revealing" some prejudice towards "Arabs" or "Muslims" in general or towards the people of OMAN in particular - nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, I have been criticized by some of you for the fact that I do NOT consider our present "War on Terror" as a "religious" war but a war which is primarily economic in its origins and import; that I do NOT have problems with Islam; that I am even quite fond of the works of the Persian Poet RUMI and of Sufiism (Islamic Mysticism).

What IS STRANGE is to find the very Republicans who do so frequently insist that this IS a war on Islam, that this IS a European/Arabian war, that Muslims and Arabs are not to be trusted - to find those who have been most inclined to stoke the fires of our anti-Arab and anti-Muslim prejudices while waving the flag and prodding us to a sense of jingoistic nationalism - to find THESE VERY PEOPLE VOTING IN FAVOR OF HANDING THE MANAGEMENT OF OUR OWN PORTS INTO THE HANDS OF A FIRM OPERATED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF OMAN!

Sadly, Jo Bonner was one of those who voted in favor of this motion this very afternoon (July 21, 2006). You may verify this by visiting the website for the clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives at... http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll392.xml

Why did this nation ever separate from Britain? Was it not related to TAXES ( ..."No Taxation without Representation"). Did the men of that generation not protest such taxation by throwing tea off of a ship in Boston Harbor? Was Washington's first major victory not secured in forcing the British Fleet to evacuate that same harbor? It Was!

And, when the Constitution was drafted and finally ratified, the federal government established by that document received 95%-99% of its annual operating revenues from a UNIFORM EXCISE TAX imposed on goods IMPORTED through our nation's ports. (If you would like to learn more about THAT please visit the Ludwig Von Mises Institute's website and watch John Sophocleus' videotaped lecture on "The Issue of Tariffs: How U.S. Revenue Collection Was Turned Inside-Out". This is available at... http://www.mises.org/media.aspx?action=showname&ID=642

Do the words "From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli" ring a bell? Why the shores of Tripoli? It was there that United States Marines first won international respect by demonstrating that this nation was capable of protecting its ships and commerce and would NOT continue to be bribed by Arabian pirates demanding "protection money" for safe passage.

Is it to be imagined the authors of our nation - Washington, Jefferson or even Hamilton - would be pleased to find the management of the ports they fought to secure glibly placed in the hands of any one other than a United States official, corporation or individual? If Jefferson were to complain on finding our ports being managed by people who might very well carry the blood of the pirates of Tripoli in their veins; would HE or Washington be in any manner 'relieved' to be informed that the management of our ports HAD been under the control of a BRITISH FIRM?

It may not be July 4th - but its STILL July. The patriotic sentiments our representatives so warmly professed on July 4th seem to have been tossed aside as quickly as they were satisfied we could no longer hear them.

So what do I want YOU to do about it?

First of all, please forward THIS message to as many friend - Libertarian or otherwise - as you possibly can.

THEN (and only then) ...give Jo Bonner as large a piece of your mind as you can safely part with.

You may WRITE to him (good old snail mail...) at...

Representative Jo Bonner (let's leave off the "Honorable" crap for now...)

315 Cannon House Office Building

Washington, DC 20515

....Or, you can telephone him at... Phone: 202-225-4931

Or you can FAX him at... Fax - 202-225-0562

Remind Jo that - as Libertarians - we're all for FREE TRADE. We are all in favor of allowing other nations to ship goods of most any variety into our ports. BUT OUR PORTS, THEMSELVES, ARE NOT FOR SALE!!!

Finally, when you go to the polls in November - be sure to write in DICK COFFEE for the United States House of Representatives. I know Dick well enough to know that Dick will do everything in his power to return the management of ports in the United States to the PEOPLE of the United States.

Please feel free to let Jo know that I contacted you about this and that I asked you to remind him that "ALLEGIANCE AND PROTECTION ARE RECIPROCAL CONSIDERATIONS!" Its somewhat ironic that Congressman Bonner's latest email to his constituents focuses on his obsession with teaching us all to recite the pledge of allegiance. The best way to secure our allegiance to any flag is to guarantee that any government it represents is protecting the rights of its citizens. Only fools pledge allegiance to just any old flag: particularly flags which serve as the colors of their oppressors.

In Liberty!,

James Hines

JAMES HINES RESIGNS AS MOBILE DISTRICT CHAIR,

AND BOB MARTIN RESIGNS FROM STATE LPA EXECUTIVE COMMITEE.

For similar yet somewhat differant reasons,

James and Bob both tended their resignations today to the state LPA.

(Bob speaking here)

As the webmaster of this site, I can speak only to my own reasons but will be happy to post James Hines reasons for public consumption if he decides to go this route.

As for myself, I have become very disillusioned with the party, both here and in Birmingham.

While some very strong and true libertarians are at the front of our current political push, I firmly believe the party has sold out it's ideals for some headlines and minor political realization.

Please do not read into this that I am quitting because of our Candidate for Govenor.

While that is part of what I see as the problem, there are also many other issues involving our organizational efforts that formed my decision.

I come from a time when grassroot political movements helped to change our nation, and I simply feel the party does not want to expend the personal effort to boost membership, gain political power, and become a viable political party in more than name only.

As a result, the party and cause as a whole has suffered from political embarressment instead of moving forward.

I no longer think the LPA goals are in line with my own Libertarian beliefs, and I cannot continue to work within a system I no longer believe in.

I have always felt the Libertarian movement here in South Alabama has been at odds with those of the EC (who are mostly in the northern part of the state). So much so, that I have even proposed, we in the south secede from the state LPA party and form our own branch of the LP (we southerners have a habit of that, if we believe in something).
Sometimes though, in a battle, you need to realize that the fight you are in may no longer be the one you believe in.

I am a Libertarian, and I shall continue to be a Libertarian, I just no longer believe my input to the state EC can be effective in promoting the principals of LIBERTARIANISM.

As such, I have tended my resignation.

I assume we few lovers of freedom will continue to meet at Satori, or Dick's house, or some other local spot the first Thursday of each month.

And unless the few other members of our fight here decide to toss in the towel, I shall continue to make the monthly trek to talk politics, and sip a little irish whiskey with my dear, dear friends.

As for this website? I will continue to maintain it, though in a much more limited manner, and post your thoughts on the fight for liberty.

It has been a joy working with you all.

Togather in Liberty,

Bob Martin

Dear Libertarians,
The following story was printed on several national news websites by The Associated Press,
and at this time we are DEMANDING a retraction notice be printed on the same national level by the AP.

Ala. Candidate's Views Startle Democrats By JAY REEVES,
Associated Press Writer
Fri May 12, 7:05 PM ET

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Democratic Party leaders are wondering what to do about a candidate for attorney general who denies the Holocaust occurred and wants to "reawaken white racial awareness."

Larry Darby, the founder of the Atheist Law Center, made an abortive bid for the AG job as a Libertarian in 2002, but only recently have his views on race and the Holocaust come to light.

He has no money for campaign advertising and has made only a few campaign speeches, but garnered 12 percent support in the June 6 primary in a poll of 400 registered voters last month.

The poll, which was conducted by a university professor for Alabama media outlets and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points, shows Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson ahead with 21 percent of the vote but about two-thirds of respondents undecided.

The state Democratic chairman, Joe Turnham, said the party began an investigation last week after hearing about some of Darby's comments in a television interview.

While the party supports the free-speech rights of any candidate, Turnham said some of Darby's views appear to be in "a realm of thought that is unacceptable."

"Any type of hatred toward groups of people, especially for political gain, is completely unacceptable in the Alabama Democratic Party," said Turnham.

It is unclear whether the party could do anything at this point, although the party could decline to certify the results should he win.

In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, Darby said he believes no more than 140,000 Jewish people died in Europe during World War II, and most of them succumbed to typhus.

Historians say about 6 million Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis, but Darby said the figure is a false claim of the "Holocaust industry."

Darby said he will speak Saturday near Newark, N.J., at a meeting of National Vanguard, which bills itself as an advocate for the white race. Some of his campaign materials are posted on the group's Internet site.

"It's time to stop pushing down the white man. We've been discriminated against too long," Darby said in the interview.

Tyson said he does not consider Darby to be a serious candidate.

"I am astonished as anyone has ever been that anyone is running for public office in Alabama on that platform," he said.

The winner of the Democratic primary will face either Attorney General Troy King or Mark Montiel, his opponent in the Republican primary.

As far as we can tell, NO ONE in the Libertarian Party of Alabama, or in our state office was ever contacted by AP to ask if this person was an official candidate of the Libertarian party, which HE WAS NOT.

He never attended our convention asking to be placed in nomination as a candidate.

As such he NEVER has had the endorement of the LPA which is needed to run and be identified as a Libertarian Candidate in the State of Alabama.

As such, we are DEMANDING that AP print a retraction on the same national level of this false news information, and apologize to the LPA and our members.

Next Meeting!

A new place and face!

Please join us at our next meeting, Thursday June 1st, at 6:30pm at the West Mobile Regional Library.

BIG NEWS FROM THE 2006 STATE LIBERTARIAN CONVENTION!

First, A personal message from Bob Martin,
Your former Mobile District Chair of the LPA

Dear friends,

I am happy to report, after the State Party Convention last week, that I no longer am your District Chair.

Due to my many business and fraturnal time constraints, I decided to pass that job back to the party and was happy to see our former District Chair and Former State Chair James Hines nominated and elected to this position.

Most of you know James and know what an amazing dedicated spirit he will bring to this local position. Please join us at the next meeting if you can, and welcome James back to our local political family.

But what about me?
Just like a bad penny I will keep turning up.
While no longer the Mobile District Chair, at the convention I was elected to an "At Large" position on the State Executive Committee. This position will allow me to report the doings of our executive committee to our local members, and I will also continue on as the webmaster of this site.

So, if you wish any of your concerns be made to the EC, or if you would like a Libertarian Concern represented on this website, please let me know.

It has been an honor serving you in my former position, and I look forward to this next step in our lifelong adventure.

Together in the fight for liberty,

-Bob Martin

STATE LPA CONVENTION NEWS!

Loretta Nall
Officially Named
Libertarian Party Candidate
for Alabama Governor

On April 8, 2006 the Libertarian Party of Alabama held its annual convention in Montgomery where, amidst much excitement and some spirited debate, they officially named Loretta Nall as their candidate for Governor in the 2006 election.

Despite opposition in her own small rank at the convention (six out of 22 people cast votes for "None of the above" her at the party's convention Saturday) -- Nall says her "chances are as good as anybody else's."

In a statement released by Nall after the convention Mrs. Nall stated,

"I am deeply honored to be given the official sanction of the Alabama Libertarian Party to run for the office of Governor. I am committed to doing everything in my power to make this a successful election with progressive political victories on many fronts in addition to being victorious in my bid for the Governor's seat.

My candidacy heralds the dawn of a new era in Alabama politics in which the common people will once again have a voice in their government and common sense will rule on Goat Hill."

Nall's platform, which she maintains is just common sense, promotes Initiative & Referendum, drug policy and prison reform, tax cuts for private and home school families, repealing sales tax on food, non-compliance with the Patriot and REAL ID Acts, calling for Alabama National Guard troops to be brought home from Iraq, separation of religion and Government, legal lottery and casino gambling run by private enterprise and the promotion and development of alternative fuel sources so that Alabama can begin to decrease its dependence on foreign oil.

A news conference was given April 11 on the steps of the State Capitol in Montgomery where Loretta Nall and two other candidates (see more below) Dick Clark for House District 79 and William McLaurien for Mayor of Auburn were presented to the people of Alabama and have officially kicked off their campaigns.

For more information, please contact the Nall for Governor campaign via email or by calling 256-625-9599 or the Libertarian Party headquarters at 205-401-7331.

MORE CONVENTION NEWS!

Dick Clark wins nomination and is elected new state chairman of the Alabama Libertarian Party.

Dick Clark WINS The Libertarian Convention vote and his state legislative campaign in Alabama's 79th district is really picking up steam as campaign volunteers near 75% completion in ballot access petitioning efforts.

While concerns were made at the convention that Dick might be taking on too much work (as State Chairman while also running for office), he made a stirring speech and convinced most that he can handle both the election and the position.

Clark is a 2004 Auburn University graduate who now works as a librarian at the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn.

His first bid for public office was a 2002 race for Alabama Public Service Commission, Place 1.

Clark states, "My reason for entering this race is that I believe that the 79th district is already fairly libertarian. It is time that the district's voters have the option to vote for a real fiscal conservative who actually intends to reduce state taxes and expenditures and who will stand firm for the constitutional rights of his constituents."

One campaign pledge by Clark is to accept no state compensation if elected. This pledge is intended to convince voters of his sincerity, explains Clark.

"I really want to reduce state spending, so we can start with my pay and work from there."

Clark is unopposed in seeking the Libertarian Party of Alabama's nomination this Saturday at the LPA state convention in Montgomery. More information is available at CitizenClark.com.

Charles Richard "Dick" Clark, II was born in Slidell, Louisiana in 1981. He is the eldest of five sons of Dick Clark and Carolyn Clark. While growing up, Dick was active in the First Baptist Church of Slidell and the youth soccer program (as a player and referee). He was also active in Boy Scouting, earning the Eagle Scout award while a member of Boy Scout Troop 326. In 1996 the Clark family moved to Hoover, Alabama.

While in Hoover, Clark attended Hoover High School and continued to referee soccer as a member of the GBSOA. Clark was a founding member of the Jefferson County Teen Court program. In 1997, he co-founded OnTarget Technologies with high school classmate Ryan Duffner. Clark's involvement in the company ceased in 1999, when he moved to Auburn to attend Auburn University.

His first job in Auburn was teaching beginner-level violin to children and the occasional adult (1999–2002) both in the now-defunct Crossroads Music in downtown Auburn and in private homes. He joined Lakeview Baptist Church soon after taking up residence in Auburn.

In December 2004, Clark graduated from Auburn University with a B.A. in English (concentration in Technical and Professional Communication) and a minor in Philosophy. He is currently employed by a private educational institute in Auburn, where he is a librarian, archivist, and copyeditor.

Clark has been politically active as a libertarian, serving on the Libertarian Party of Alabama's Executive Committee as Auburn District Chairman (2002–2004; 2005–2006), At-Large Representative (2004–2005), and Chairman (2006–Present).

In 2002, he ran for Alabama Public Service Commission, Place 1, garnering 36,639 votes in a three-way race. During that time he was also part of the John Sophocleus for Governor campaign staff. Clark was also President of the Auburn University Libertarians from 2001–2004.

Dick Coffee of Mobile Wins the Party's nomination for U.S. House
Dick Coffee has announced his candidacy for District 1, US House of Representatives after receiving the nomination of the Libertarian Party of Alabama at their State Convention recently.

“In Alabama, and throughout the United States, it is time that we consider smaller and much less intrusive government as a major solution to our ills.” said Dick Coffee. “When it comes to government , smaller is better!” he added.

Dick Coffee challenges Congressman Bonner to force him out of the race by reading and working within the philosophy of Section 35 of the Alabama Constitution. Dick Coffee believes it to be an incredible quote that defines the purpose of both Alabama and Federal government:

dick2.jpeg - 36686 Bytes
“The sole object and only legitimate end of government is to protect the citizen in the enjoyment of life, liberty, and property, and when the government assumes other functions, it is usurpation and oppression.”

“That is a Libertarian talking!” Coffee stated emphatically.

Coffee is a strong believer in the United States Constitution, and believes that Congress should do (and thus spend money on) ONLY those things allowed to it by the people as stated in Article One, Section Eight of The Constitution. He challenges everyone to read The Constitution this week, and especially this section.

Regarding the current state of world affairs, Dick Coffee responded: "The troubles we are experiencing throughout the world might well have been avoided if the US had subscribed to Thomas Jefferson's admonition in his first inaugural address, "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship, with all nations -- entangling alliances with none." Had we learned from our history, the current state of terrorism and war might well not exist. We need to start with a through examination of our foreign policy, which will in turn allow us to rethink our military purpose and structure.”

William McLaurine wins convention approval as a candidate for Auburn city mayor.

Mr. McLaurine has been involved in a fight with the Auburn Police Department for illegally demanding he show id while he was simply walking down the street. (Illegal per the supreme court)

Due to a health condition, Mr. McLaurine prefers not to drive, and walks near his home quite often.

He wants to make the police and other city officials more responsive to citizens and won the hearts of most at the convention with his appeal of our support, which he received.

What is a Libertarian?

Frequently asked questions about the Libertarian Party

Libertarians believe that you have the right to live your life as you wish, without the government interfering -- as long as you don’t violate the rights of others. politically, this means libertarians favor rolling back the size and cost of government, and eliminating laws that stifle the economy and control people’s personal choices.

Are libertarians liberal or conservative?

libertarians are neither.
Unlike liberals or conservatives, libertarians advocate a high degree of both personal and economic liberty. for example, libertarians agree with conservatives about freedom in economic matters, so we're in favor of lowering taxes, slashing bureaucratic regulation of business, and charitable -- rather than government -- welfare. but libertarians also agree with liberals on personal tolerance, so we're in favor of people’s right to choose their own personal habits and lifestyles.

In a sense, libertarians “borrow” from both sides to come up with a logical and consistent whole -- but without the exceptions and broken promises of republican and democratic politicians. that's why we call ourselves the party of principle.

How large is the libertarian party?

By almost every objective measure, the libertarian party is the third-largest political party in america. we’re active in all 50 states, have more than 200,000 registered voters and more than 600 people in office, which is more than all other third parties combined.

What kind of offices do libertarians hold?

Around the USA there are libertarian mayors, county executives, county council members and even a libertarian sheriff! libertarians also serve on school boards and in hundreds of local offices. in 2004 our candidates for u.s. earned over 1 million votes for the third time in a row, which is a feat no other third party has achieved.

These elected libertarians are already hard at work saving you money and protecting your civil liberties. in fact, libertarians saved Americans over $2.2 billion in 2004 alone.

what kind of people join the libertarian party?

People like you. People who used to be republicans, democrats, and independents – from all walks of life. They joined us because they realize that we’re the only political party working for their personal and economic liberty.

Another question we sometimes hear: is political extremist lyndon larouche in the libertarian party? no. larouche has never been associated in any way with us. he runs for office as a democrat.

How can I join the party? Our membership dues are $25 a year, which gets you a subscription to our monthly newspaper lp news and helps finance our work to spread the word about the libertarian party. with your help, we can keep the media informed; run internet, radio, and magazine advertisements; send information to more americans; support libertarian candidates in winnable races; promote pro-freedom legislation at the federal and state level; provide resources to our state organizations; and more.

Ask yourself: is government too big or too small? are taxes too high or too low? does the government regulate my business too much or too little? does the government control my personal life too much or not enough? if you agree, like most americans, that government is too large, too expensive, and meddles too much, the libertarian party is for you!

Now it’s time to take action.

Join the libertarian party today – and become part of the new choice in american politics!
